Internships

The Greensboro Children's Museum is actively seeking interns to work at the Museum!

We have unique intern experiences that offer flexible scheduling and hands-on interactive work.  Students will be supervised by caring and supportive staff.  The internships are unpaid.  College Freshman, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors are welcome to apply.

If you are interested or have students who may be interested, please contact Beth Lynch at 336-574-2898 ext 305 (blynch@gcmuseum.com)

or Tommie Lynn Sullivan 336-574-2898 ext 310. (members@gcmuseum.com).

Majors that offer the most benefit to the Museum as well as the student include:

  • Art/Art Education

Interns in this area are needed to work in the Creation Station exhibit, our interactive art gallery.  Students will create art projects for the children (and parents) to engage in and will help promote creativity and art education.  Individuals must have an outgoing personality and enjoy working with children, as this will be a very hands-on internship. It's a perfect position for a full-time student-teacher or any education major with an interest in teaching art to children.

  • Early Childhood Education

As an Education Intern, students will promote the "play" philosophy through creative engagement of children and families.    Students will provide support to the Education Director for existing and upcoming educational programs.  Responsibilities may include researching, developing, implementing, and/or facilitating activities through prop boxes to be used in exhibits, through leading staff/volunteer trainings, or even through parent education sessions.  In order to support the learning experience of school children, interns may facilitate and further develop Explore-a-Tour curriculums (guided school visits based on NC Standard Course of Study).  Interns may also be asked to engage children and families in special activities/projects that are designed to enhance the overall visitor experience and understanding of a particular exhibit content. Students should understand that the ability to multi-task and demonstrate initiative are essential in creating a successful internship at GCM.

  • Facilities Management

Interns in this area will learn many of the aspects of running a children’s museum.  Students will be trained at the admissions desk, assist with field trips and parties, coordinate scheduling of volunteers and staff and help support the Chief Operating Officer and Weekend Supervisor.

  • Marketing Assistant

Students in this position will work closely with the Marketing Director to assist with various marketing and community relation needs.  Sample projects could include creating flyers, posting events on local websites, taking pictures, planning special events, working on ads, designing brochures, updating the website and writing press releases.  Knowledge of graphics and design programs including publisher, photoshop and illustrator preferred.

  • Theatre and Performing Arts

Students in this position will provide support in our Theater and Performing Arts area in a variety of ways.  Responsibilities could include facilitating puppet shows and plays, storytelling, acting, leading Karaoke, etc. Additionally, we need engaging folks to run programs on the floor and to dress up as Museum characters like Nonie, Georgie (the Museum mascot), grocery store employees, the mailman, and all the other characters that live in Our Town.

  • Exhibit/Floor Manager Interns

Students in this position will provide support to the Floor Managers and Education staff to help bring GCM's Exhibits to life. Interns will help improve educational components and interactivity of the exhibits.  Students will also assist in Exhibit development and enhancements.
