Culture of Color

Culture of Color, a program unique to the Greensboro Children’s Museum, strives to explore, celebrate, and support Greensboro’s diverse community (through people, patience, and play) by providing children and families with year round opportunities to learn more about the cultures and people that surround them. By working closely with local community members and the Center for New North Carolinians, Culture of Color provides relevant programming that represents the many faces of our diverse town. Culture of Color celebrations take place at the museum, free with admission or membership, the third Saturday of every month from 11am - 3pm, each celebration providing a variety of activities and learning experiences for our visitors. This program is made possible in part, with support from Lincoln Financial Group.

June 16 - Juneteenth!

Celebrate family, freedom, and the importance of community through storytelling, music, history, and play. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the US. GCM is proud to commemorate this special time and celebrate the future of our community while exploring the ways in which African Americans have contributed to our local, rich culture.

July 28 - Olympics Day!

Be your own Olympic star at the Greensboro Children's Museum during our 2012 Olympic Games! Try your hand at Judo and TaeKwonDo, participate in a mini-triathalon, and try a few tumbles or balance your body in our gymnastics challenge area. You can even help us pass the torch as you give it your best during a silly relay race. It's time to go for the gold!

How Diverse is Greensboro?

Do you know how diverse your town really is? There are over 150 first languages spoken in the Guilford County school system and Greensboro is one of the top resettlement locations in the nation!

Outreach:

As part of Culture of Color, GCM has partnered with CNNC to have children visit the museum 2-3 times a month for a special, educational program and time to explore the museum. The children are all members of the after school tutoring programs at Glen Haven, Avalon, and Oakwood communities.

For Volunteers:

Do you love working with children? Interested in cross-cultural communication? Have a passion for connecting to your community and curious about receiving a hands-on, enriching experience in alternative education?

As a Culture of Color volunteer, you will have the opportunity to assist during the after school program, serving a diverse range of children, as well as assist with the planning and implementation of our Saturday Celebrations and help ‘behind the scenes’ with research and material prep.
