Announcing the Edible Schoolyard Director!

Charlie Headington, UNCG professor and advisor to numerous edible garden projects, local food initiatives, and ecological development design, will be the Museum's new Edible Schoolyard Director. Charlie is co-founder of Slow Food Piedmont, an educational and advocacy group for local food, and has been featured on local TV and regional magazines. His reputation truly proceeds him as a local food educator and Charlie will be a valuable asset to the Edible Schoolyard Project!

Joining Charlie as the Lead Teacher, will be Eleanor Farlow. For the past ten years, Eleanor has taught at the Greensboro Montessori School (GMS). During that time, she taught lower and upper elementary students and assisted Charlie with the extensive garden program. Eleanor brings a knowledgeable educational background to the ESY and will make a great addition to this team!

The Edible Schoolyard will include a half acre garden area comprised of hands-on organic teaching gardens and kitchen classrooms. Volunteers are needed! Join Charlie in the garden and help spread mulch, plant trees and make the garden beautiful! Contact the Children's Museum at (336) 574-2898 or by e-mail at cheadington@gcmuseum.com.

Edible Schoolyard Update!

Construction is underway for the Garden and new teaching kitchen! Despite the freezing temps, we're working very hard to keep the construction progress moving forward!  We've demolished a building that wasn't needed, are clearing the land and working on building new entrance doors to the garden area.

Stay tuned for more info to come...

The Museum broke ground on the new Edible Schoolyard on Thursday, September 24th and it was a great event!  Special guest, Alice Waters (founder of original Edible Schoolyard, nationally renowned chef & author) spoke about how important this new project is for the Museum and for the Greensboro community. GCM's Executive Director, Betsy Grant, Board Chairman, John Cross, and Former Board Chairman, Melanie Soles, thanked everyone for supporting the project and shared future goals for the project. Yvonne Johnson (Greensboro Mayor) presented Alice Waters with a key to the city of Greensboro and children helped to dig the ceremonial garden plot.  Other special guests included Marsha Guerrrero (Director of Edible Schoolyard Program) and Mo Green (Guilford County Schools Superintendent).

Project Overview

The Greensboro Children's Museum's Edible Schoolyard, scheduled to open in the Spring of 2010, is modeled on the first Edible Schoolyard at Martin Luther King Middle School in Berkeley, CA, created by Alice Waters and the Chez Panisse Foundation.  Ms. Waters founded the Chez Panisse Foundation (1996) to transform public education through sponsoring projects such as the Edible Schoolyard and the School Lunch Initiative that integrate gardening and cooking into the core academic curriculum while ensuring that nutritious, fresh meals are available to all children at school.

GCM’s Edible Schoolyard will be located on a half-acre of the Museum’s outdoor play area and will include organic vegetables, herbs, fruits, edible flowers, trees and shrubs, with winding natural walkways and seating areas. Major components of the project include an outdoor gardening classroom, kitchen classrooms (inside & outside), a chicken coop, cisterns, a marsh pond, and beautiful ramadas and arbors for gathering. Click here to see an enlarged copy of the planned design created by Robin Moore, Director of The Natural Learning Initiative.

Through programs, camps and field trips, children will learn about organic gardening (planting, growing and harvesting) and how to prepare and cook fresh food while learning stewardship of the land and the wonders of nature.  The Edible Schoolyard will foster awareness of the environmental and personal impact of food choices through learning about seasonality, sustainable farming practices and healthy, balanced nutrition.
